The Work-in-data Project

Labor is the main source of income for the poor in all countries. Understanding the nature of work is, therefore, key to uncovering why livelihoods differ across the globe. While many surveys are conducted worldwide, we lack a single one-stop data source that encompasses these surveys. Our research team meticulously combs through labor force, household, and time-use surveys across the world and harmonizes these into a unified single dataset.

This resource allows us to study work and time use at a granular level across an unprecedented breadth of countries and continents. Informed by these data, we conduct frontier research to establish novel facts on the nature of work, develop theories and propose policies. Eventually, we hope that our work helps to understand better how people can live fulfilling and productive live and develop policies that help them do so.
